چکیده

The Lucas-Lehmer (LL) test is the most efficient known for deterministically testing the primality of Mersenne numbers, i.e., the integers Ml = 2 l − 1, for l ≥ 1. The Mersenne numbers are so-called in honour of the French scholar Marin Mersenne (1588-1648), who in 1644 published a list of exponents l ≤ 257 which he conjectured produced all and only those Ml which are prime, for l in this range, namely 1 l = 2, 3, 5, 7, 13, 17, 19, 31, 67, 127 and 257 [1]. Mersenne’s list turned out to be incorrect, omitting the prime-producing l = 61, 89 and 107 and including the composite-producing l = 67 and 257, although this was not finally confirmed until 1947, using both the LL test and contemporary mechanical calculators [2]. The LL test is based on the following theorem.

Note on the Lucas–Lehmer Test

A proof of the Lucas–Lehmer test can be difficult to find, for most textbooks that state the result do not prove it. Over the past two decades, there have been some efforts to produce elementary versions of this famous result. However, the two that we acknowledge in this note did so by using either algebraic numbers or group theory. It also appears that in the process of trying to develop an el...

Gaussian Mersenne and Eisenstein Mersenne primes

The Biquadratic Reciprocity Law is used to produce a deterministic primality test for Gaussian Mersenne norms which is analogous to the Lucas–Lehmer test for Mersenne numbers. It is shown that the proposed test could not have been obtained from the Quadratic Reciprocity Law and Proth’s Theorem. Other properties of Gaussian Mersenne norms that contribute to the search for large primes are given....

Tribalism & Racism among the Ancient Greeks A Weberian Perspective

Were the ancients Greeks “racists” in the modern sense of the term “racist”? The terms ancient Greek “proto-racism”, tribalism (and/or racism) are used here to denote the abstract, narcissistic notion that not only the non-Greek barbarians, but also certain ancient Greek tribes (like the Macedonians, the Boeoteans etc.) should be excluded from the Hellenic community, for they were considered to...

Tracks of ancient cosmetics in the modern era of cosmetics

Cosmetics is as old as the history of human being. It has been present in human life since the times of the most ancient civilizations. Perfumery is one of the oldest branches of cosmetics. Valerian perfumes found from the Pharaohs’ pyramids, had maintained their aroma. Coriander, Mace oil, cardamom, cinnamon, and juniper were also the favorite materials used for perfumery in ancient Egyptian c...

On an Analogue to the Lucas-lehmer-riesel Test Using Elliptic Curves

Following an idea of B. H. Gross, who presented an elliptic curve test for Mersenne primes Mp = 2 p − 1, we propose a similar test with elliptic curves for generalized Thabit primes K(h, n) := h · 2 − 1 for any positive odd number h and any integer n > log2(h) + 2.
